The year is coming to an end and writers are making their traditional “year-end” lists filled with their top picks for best albums, best moments in hip-hop, best collaborations, and more. Those are cool and all but we love a good futuristic prediction on what to look forward to for the next year. Discovering new talented artists that haven’t reached the masses yet is always a good time. Who doesn’t love being the first person in their circle to hear a new song and putting the homies on to some new ish?
For 17 years, BBC Sound has been creating their annual “Artist On The Rise” list and their predictions have been pretty accurate. 2019’s winners include:
Rosalie: A Catalan star who’s revitalizing flamenco, “Malamente”.
Octavian: A Genre-defying London MC, “Party Here”.
Flohio: Raw, punchy, poetic rap, “Wild Yout”.
Slowthai: Truth telling outside rap, “Ladies“.
Ella Mai: Platinum certified retro R&B singer, “Boo’d Up“.
Mahalia: Casual and effortless soul anthems, “Wish I Missed My Ex”.
Dermot Kennedy: Folk roots with a hip-hop influence, “Power Over Me”.
King Princess: Queer pop queen-in waiting, “1950″.
Grace Carter: Personal piano pop, “Silence”.
Sea Girls: Fired-up indie anthems, “Too Much Fun”.
Past winners include Adele, Sam Smith, Years & Years, and Haim. The 2018 list included our girl Billie Eilish, Rex Orange County, and Pale Waves, alongside eventual winner Sigrid. We’re excited to check out all of these artists and see how everything plays out in 2019!
