#MusicMondays: Get To Know Sevana, The Next Big Star Of In.Digg.Nation Collective

Last Friday, Sevana debuted her brand new single “Nobody Man” accompanied with a vibrant 90’s inspired music video directed by Wade Rhoden. The song is an ode to the audacious concept of being in a faithful relationship. Singer and dancer, Sevana is changing the narrative by not giving into stereotypes of disrupting relationships. The track blends traditional R&B/soul and Caribbean tropical percussive rhythms.

The singer, actress, and model who is now the next big star from the In.Digg.Nation Collective is a quintessential triple threat, making her Jamaica’s “It Girl.” Sevana got her first big musical break in 20019 with the girl group SLR, placing third on Digital Rising Stars (Jamaica’s equivalent of American Idol). After that, she was introduced to audiences globally through her feature on “Sudden Flight” from Protoje’s 2014 album Ancient Future. In 2016 she released her first self titles solo EP, and she played the starring role in the groundbreaking Jamaican web series, Losing Patience.

We got a chance to get to know the Caribbean queen herself on a personal level, check out the interview below and be sure to watch and stream “Nobody Man.”

Being from Jamaica is a huge part of your brand identity and artistry. What is something many may not about Jamaican culture, and how has the culture impacted you creatively?

A lot of of people don’t know that Jamaica has banned single plastic use! Which is a great first step toward garbage reduction and environmental sustainability. Jamaican culture has impacted in the way that I give my all to the work I do, we’re hugely passionate people.

What is your favorite traditional Jamaican dish?

Ackee and salt fish

Describe yourself and sound in one sentence.

I would describe myself and my sound as resilient, hopefully it’s a quality people can hear (which depends on how you listen).

What’s your zodiac sign?

My friends tell me I’m on the cusp of Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Self-worth is a strong theme in your latest single, “Nobody Man.” What personally inspired this track?

The audacious concept of faithfulness in a romantic relationship.

What do you want listeners to take away from your music?

I just hope it makes them feel something.

What lyrics changed your life?

There are too many to list! One Beres Hammond lyric that I heard and let it motivate me was “Well I’m putting up resistance, I’ve got to work it out” plus that melody is SO GOOD!! Big up uncle Beres.

What’s currently on your reggae playlist? Put us on!

For You – Jaz Elise, Where I’m Coming From – Lila Iké, Chronology – Chronixx, Lion Dem Good – Jesse Royal and Protoje, Owna Lane – Teejay, Can’t Kill We – Vybz Kartel and Chronic Law

Do you have any hidden talents?

I can act and I have an eye for interior design and film as far as how something fits it in a frame!

You recently performed at Everyday People, which is known for being one of the best events in NYC for POC. How would you describe the experience & why do you think it is so important for the culture?

Everyday People explores the sophistication of POC (which has always existed since we are a nuanced people) that is important in a society that thrives on stereotypes, also, we need safe and positive spaces that unify us.

How has your experience been working with the In.Digg.Nation Collective and Protoje? Why do you feel that it is important to be collaborative as a new artist?

It’s been a great learning experience as far as the music business and working in a team is concerned. I’m thankful for the amazing opportunities I’ve had because of Protoje and Indiggcollective. It’s important to be collaborative as a new artist particularly in Jamaican music because that’s what helps to push our music forward.

What can we expect from Sevana for the rest of 2019?

Expect more new music, dope collaborations with talented producers and more gigs! You might see me in your city!!!!!!
