Naturally Me: Tips & Tricks For Natural Hair Care

In today’s day in age, more than ever, we as a society have seemed to embrace beauty in all shapes and forms. Going natural is a big epidemic and although some people may take it as following the crowd, others have seen it’s true form in self-comfort. For years, kinks and coils have been mocked and ridiculed and all any girl wanted was a weave. Now that social media has reinvented the way we communicate and share things, it has become the biggest outlet and inspiration for liberation. Seeing other women embrace their beauty makes others wanted to embrace their own. It isn’t a hot commodity it’s taking back what is ours and what has been pushed to the side for so long. Going natural has it’s ups and downs, the process isn’t easy. Going back to your roots after you’ve been accustomed to a relaxer is a challenge. However, it is a challenge anyone can overcome with a little reassurance and protective styling.

Switching up my look is my favorite pastime. I can be anyone I want to be and feel as sexy as I want to feel. Protective styling is a great way to serve looks while growing your hair out. Keep in mind that the upkeep under your hair is just as important as the maintenance on top. Do not neglect your hair and only keep up with your weave. Hair needs oil and moisture to grow. There are products that help achieve length and volume, but nothing beats household cooking oils.

Olive oil, Avocado oil and Castor oil are the holy trinity for hair growth. Olive oil thickens hair while preventing damage and adding sheen. Avocado oil helps restore hair and locks in moisture, while Olive oil improves hair elasticity while conditioning and strengthening. Coconut oil is a great bonus, it penetrates the scalp and reduces protein loss. If you have a conditioner you stand by here are a few things you may want to consider adding to it: Green Tea, for hair growth, reducing shedding and leaves hair shiny. Some of the oils I mentioned before plus Vitamin E oil and Jojoba oil. Aloe Vera for additional shine and moisture and honey to bring back life into dried out hair and extra moisture.

Apple Cider Vinegar is another key ingredient to a precious mink. There’s a great deep conditioner treatment I learned from Charice (@ChariceMonet) She also has a hair care/wig line called LoveLaceWigsAll you need for this routine is ACV, Organic egg whites, Virgin olive oil and avocado. Mix everything into a paste and massage into your scalp. Focus on your ends because those are your oldest pieces of hair, they’ve been on your head the longest so they are the most damaged. You can choose to leave this in your hair overnight with a cap or let it sit for an hour or so, it’s entirely up to you. Depending on how dry or oily your hair may be, yogurt is another ingredient you can add. I’ve done this time and time again and it’s closed my cuticles marvelously. My hair feels soft and bouncy after every treatment. I try to do this once every week or two.

Hot oil treatments are essential for growth, do these before you deep condition. Try your favorite conditioner (mine is Aussie) add Olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, hot water, mix all of those up and apply. Do not microwave, boil water then add ingredients.

Aphogee is the GOAT when it comes to rebuilding hair damage. From color or heat these products work miracles.


Here are a few tips and tricks when it comes to hair care and a good wash routine.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a great shampoo.

Wash with warm water. Hot water causes breakage and frizz. Rinse your hair out with cool to cold water and seal your shafts with oils.

Dry your hair with a t-shirt instead of a towel. If you want to buy a microfiber towel by all means go ahead. Those are the only ones I recommend because towels tend to cause friction and dryness which leads to breakage.

If your wash and gos are getting flakey, after every routine use a conditioner with added oil before applying hair gel (add oil again after gel has been placed)

Pineapples are best for wash and go preservations, if your hair isn’t long enough for one big puff add another.

Make sure you are applying your product as soon as you hop out of the shower, don’t dry your hair, add oils when wet.

Low manipulation is a major focal point when it comes to retaining hair length. Reduce the amount of times you comb your hair in a week and you will see progress. This is why protective styling plays a major part in hair growth. It limits the contact of cold weather and heat.

Detangle your hair with your fingers before using a wide tooth comb. Remember we’re trying to attain every strand we have. Fingers can feel the knots your comb can’t.

Leave some of your conditioner in your hair, it helps retain moisture.

During the winter you need as much moisture as you can get so only wash half of your conditioner out and apply olive oil right after your shower.

Cuticles are still open from the mist and steam of your shower, this is why having a good conditioner is important because conditioner will close those cuticles up while the oils penetrates and seals them.

If your rod sets are failing it’s probably because you didn’t distribute your moisturizer throughout your hair evenly or it was too wet to hold a curl (blowing out your hair is fine when done on low to cool heat)

Scarfs, bonnet, durags, pillowcases (satin) pick one because you need them. Don’t sleep on cotton and do not neglect wrapping your hair at night because friction causes dryness and dryness causes breakage.

Before I cut my hair off I wore wigs often. If you’re a wig wearer like me it’s vital to keep your hair moisturized underneath. Hair is a living, breathing organism like you and I. It needs food to eat and water to drink. Deep condition your hair and wear it in a bun or two to give it a break after a week’s wear of wigs.
