Nike and Virgil Abloh release “The Ten”

Nike and designer, Virgil Abloh, teamed up yet again to create this year’s “it” collection: “The Ten.”

Abloh and Nike have been working together since 2016 when he first visited the headquarters. He would create sketches of sneakers as a teenager and send them to Nike, as he says that Jordan was his superman. Abloh is now a creative director, DJ, designer and founder of the brand “Off-White,” which is also another name for his latest collaboration with Nike.

The two ultimately ended up creating ten different silhouettes. The shoes were divided into two themes which are “Revealing” and “Ghosting.”

“Revealing” is said to be designed to look accessible according to Nike. The five shoes are hand-cut, open-source, and reconstructed. This set includes Air Jordan 1, Nike Air max 90, Nike Air Presto, Nike Air Vapormax and Nike Blazer Mid.

“Ghosting” was designed to have translucent uppers in order to reveal another silhouette through a common material. This set includes Converse Chuck Taylor, Nike Zoom Fly SP, Nike Air Force 1 Low, Nike React Hyperdunk 2017 and Nike Air Max 97.

The overall collaboration took ten months to complete, which is one of the fastest response time that Nike has seen in regards to creating a shoe then actually producing a product.  The X-Acto knife was the main instrument used during the design process. This was intentional as Abloh wanted kids back home all over the world to be able to create an actual design and prototype.

With the Air Force 1 model, the foam within each shoes tongue is revealed, the swoosh is moved, and pops of color are added to the shoe within an orange tab. The main idea around the shoe is to help others understand design as the process that Abloh took to create each pair can be seen throughout the models.

A select few celebrities already has their hand on the most coveted shoe while the full collection will be available to the public in November at NikeLab stores and select retailers.
