It is officially C-O-L-D outside. Just the thought of stepping out into the frigidly numb air in the morning can be overwhelming and enough to make you say “not today” to any task or activity, but unfortunately work, school and life still calls. While bundling up with hats, scarves, gloves and a good winter coat are a must, sometimes it’s just not enough when temperatures fall below 20 and feel more like -10. Fortunately, there are a few tricks you can steal from New Yorkers as it is imperative to stay warm in the city that never sleeps.
A rule of thumb for wintertime warmth is layering. Creating layers without looking bulky is a little tricky but it can be done. The key is to layer clothing specifically made for warmth. Instead of just piling on a bulky sweater over a lumpy long sleeve tee, you’ll want to layer with a purpose. Starting at the base should be a thermal undershirt and a pair of fleece lined leggings. Generally worn by skiers’ thermal undershirts hold lots of warmth close to your body and are super sleek, while the leggings add warmth and coziness and are a must under any pair of jeans. Finally, your base layer needs socks because frozen feet are no good when you’re moving about on foot. Invest in a few good pairs of cable knit boot socks, they will be your saving grace under thin leather tennis shoes and roomy boots.
Sure, the layering starts underneath your clothes, but it doesn’t stop there. An ultra-thin puffer jacket or vest is great for layering underneath wool coats. They are incredibly thin and provide an extra layer of warmth when the wind is whipping around. Uniqlo offers a wide range of styles and colors at great prices. Keeping in mind that most of our heat is lost through the top of the head, hands, and feet, you don’t want to skip out on hats and gloves. Cashmere and thermal beanies are the best at keeping in warmth while protecting hair from frizz and breakage. As for gloves, there are tons of warm options with touch screen compatibility (seriously nothing is worse than trying to text in the cold). For endless affordable options check out Amazon or Target.
Base layers are the true GOAT of dealing with cold weather and can be worn with almost any type of look. Whether you’re going out or just going to get coffee, these layer options will keep you warm under all your favorite clothes. Throw on your favorite sweater that’s too thin on its own or those wide leg pants that generally usher all the cold air up freezing your legs to the bone. The base layers have you covered for the cold from Jan-mid March and sometimes April.
