#SolaceSunday: Beyond Tidying Up, the KonMari Method is Life Changing

It may not be Spring, but it is never too early to clean and get organized.

Marie Kondo‘s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying: A simple, effective way to banish clutter forever is an absolute must-read for every mover and shaker out there. Kondo is an esteemed Japanese organizer, so gifted in her ability to declutter not only her life but her clients, that she blessed us with several books on the topic.

Although not easy, the KonMari method illustrated in Kondo’s book outlines how you can get rid of unnecessary items in your living space and get organized. Why is this so vital?

Look around you, look at your dresser, your closet, your floor… odds are, each of those spaces have more than a few items in or around them. Odds also are that a vast majority of those items serve little to no purpose and/or could be stored more efficiently elsewhere. As humans, we have a propensity to hang onto things as talisman’s of our past – unfortunately these charms eventually reveal their true identity with time, just inanimate objects with falsely perceived value.

“Start by discarding. Then organize your space, thoroughly, completely, in one go. If you adopt this approach – the KonMari method – you’ll never revert to clutter again.”

Life is crazy and things come at us quick, as a result, we often allow things to pile up around us – both literally and metaphorically. Studies show that piles of items in the home are directly related to stress-induced anxiety and rises in cortisol levels! Scary, right? There is a psychology to clutter – some researchers believe that where your clutter lies and how extensive it is can often be a direct reflection of internal turmoil. Chaotic home, chaotic spirit. Often times, messiness is representative of a lack of control, perhaps its at work, your relationship, school, or some sort of instability within yourself emotionally.

Author of Behind the Clutter, June Saruwatari states,

“Decluttering [believes Saruwatari] isn’t just about getting your desk and closet in order. It’s about relieving yourself of all the stuff you’re hanging onto from past careers, relationships, and unfinished business. It was a huge ‘aha’ moment for me to realize the power of going through your clutter and letting go of it.”

Rest assured, Kondo is here to assist you with clearing your home and as a result, your mind.

“A dramatic reorganization of the home causes correspondingly dramatic changes in lifestyle and perspective. It is life transforming.”

Below are a few tips plucked from the text ( as you can imagine, the book provides more detailed support so check it out!)

  • Clean all at once, don’t tidy half-heartedly and put things off for another day
  • Organize your goods by category, not location in the home
  • Visualize your destination (your dream life, if you will)
  • Analyze why you want to reach a certain destination/end goal
  • Decide what items get you excited, and trash the ones that you feel indifferent towards
  • Throw out what you don’t want before you start putting things back into place

Hope this inspires you to get smart and restart, may the cleaning gods be ever in your favor!
