THROWBACK: Janet Jackson – “When I Think Of You”

This video and song debuted in 1986, with a 20 year old Janet on vocals. Written and produced by the legendary duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, it became Janets (“Miss Jackson” if your nasty’s) first number one hit on the Billboard chart. She also became the youngest artist (since Stevie Wonder) to have a number one hit on Billboard.

The video was directed by Julien Temple, who would also later direct “Alright” – a super classic! The video features an opening, similar to a 1986 movie scene directed by Temple called “Absolute Beginners” which features David Bowie and Sade Adu (I’m so stoked I uncovered this gem as a HUGE Sade fan!). The video appears to be 1 take, but is actually only 5 cuts. Some of the scenes were staged by Hollywood choreographer Michael Kidd and the choreographer was none other than Paula Abdul.
