Vertical Farming is the future for Agricultural Advancement

As living a healthier lifestyle is becoming more popular, different ways to produce more organic foods are being created. One in particular is the idea of vertical farming. Vertical farming is the practice of producing food and medicine in vertically stacked layers.

Although many vertical farms are built in large stacks of layers, the trait that defines a vertical farm is that the growing plane is vertical instead of being horizontal like traditional farming. The plants grow along the sides of tall towers with lights place on the inside.Vents on the ceiling are there to release excess heat, lowering the energy use. Excess water drips to the bottom to be recycled. Condensation is collected, filtered, and fed back to the farm.

Vertical farming is often controlled with technology and the manipulation of common elements such as humidity control, temperature control, lighting, and nutrients and fertilizer control. The lighting utilizes software to best provide the right spectrum and intensity of light for every plant. If one particular section is struggling, the software can adjust in order to rehabilitate any plants in need of special attention. This type of farming eliminates unwanted chemicals and pesticides.

The fact that the produce that comes from vertical farming is organic, isn’t the only benefit from the new reality. Vertical farming also allows for year-round production, eliminates agricultural runoff, eliminates weather related crop failures, offers the possibility of sustainability for urban centers and much more.

Another factor that plays into vertical farming is the amount of money that the market has the potential to bring. It is projected by Global Market Insights that the vertical farming market will be valued at 13 billion by 2024. There would be low labor costs and more accessibility to fresh food.

Vertical farming has the ability to grow up to 350 times more than a regular farm. Approximately, 500 vertical farms with one farm in every metro area with one million people is what the future for vertical looks like globally. By the year 2024, vertical is said to be a part of at least every major city in the world.
