From being a director, writer, and actor, Issa Rae has become quite the Renaissance woman. A black woman who wears many different hats and does it well. Starting with her YouTube series, Awkward Black Girl that debuted back in 2011, which cultivated a huge cult following that catapulted her to creating a hit TV series with HBO that we know as Insecure. Now, Issa Rae enters the world of the music industry.

We learned that Issa Rae just launched her new music label that is within a partnership with Atlantic Records called Raedio. With her amazing music taste and being able to find emerging artists to showcase on her HBO’s series Insecure, it all makes sense for this to happen. “Music has always been an essential part of every project I do and working with emerging talent is a personal passion”, as Rae mentions in a press statement. Issa and her team prove it repeatedly that their skill of curating a soundtrack is impeccable. As an introduction to her new label, she presents Haitian-American artist, TeaMarr who serves as the opening act of the label with her new single, “Kinda Love.”

Issa Rae becomes an example of how it’s important to tie music and film together. Picking the right songs for scenes is pivotal and crucial that can either project deep emotions or enhance the storytelling. Music has become an essential tool in film-making. It gives the ability to portray an array of emotions, captures settings, creating atmospheres, and tells stories with feeling. Music drives the narratives of films, whether it’s a familiar song that the audience will know or an underscore for the film that provides a tone for these different scenes. With this knowledge, it’s without a doubt that Issa would be successful in the music business.
